FATSO is an original musical specifically written to be performed by adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. When produced as a professional theatrical piece, FATSO brings greater quality of life to each of its performers, as artists and as people. FATSO has universal meaning for audiences and is highly entertaining.
In July of 1977, FATSO was performed professionally for the first time, at the Delta Community College Theater, with a cast comprised of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities attending the Alan Short Center in Stockton, CA.
In 1978, the cast and directors took FATSO on a national tour. The musical was well-received by audiences across the country. The tour ended its run in New Orleans, LA at Loyola University’s Marquette Theater, where the show was part of the 1978 National Theatre Association Conference.
In 1981, FATSO was revived and produced in Sacramento, CA with a new cast of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, all of whom were students attending McClaskey Adult Center in Sacramento. An award-winning documentary entitled “They Call It FATSO” was created around the 1981 revival.
In early 2023, Process Theatre Productions became interested in exploring whether the foundational messages of FATSO still held up after more than 45 years. Would a musical about “loving who you are” and learning that “life isn’t about what you CAN’T do, it’s about what you CAN do” still be accepted and found meaningful in today’s world.
The revival of FATSO – A New Musical was produced and performed at the Black Box Theater in West Sacramento, CA in September, 2023.

The setting is a party, the time is now. 8 guests arrive at a party and start to get to know each other. A final guest enters. This guest is obscenely fat, and they call him Fatso. Fatso is laughed at and ignored. One by one, the guests of the party meet Fatso, and he learns that each of them hate parties for different reasons. And all of them are afraid of getting laughed at. Fatso helps each of them realize that life is not about what you CAN’T do, it’s about what you CAN do. By helping others, Fatso learns to love himself for just the way he is.
